Fifth about The Seventh

Top 10 Movies – 2022

2022 was a furious filmgoing year, with an unequaled quantity and variety of films watched. But 2023 was barely starting as a deep personal loss came along.

All of a sudden, all wind left my sails. Watching movies, writing, thinking about a silly awards season, all of it and much much more became hard, meaningless.

Still, my Dad would not like me to skip this list, I believe. So, in abridged form, with the hope of a full return in 12 months, here are my Top 10 Movies of 2022.

Best Documentary Feature Film: The Glance of Music (Ennio)

Best film of the year. It would be pretty good if it was just Ennio Morricone’s music playing over a dark frame since his music is phenomenally good. The film, however, includes a very deep conversation about music. Also, any film about the love for Morricone is also a film about the love for movies.

Best Live-Action Feature Film:  The Eight Mountains (Le Otto Montagne)

This is a beautiful film about relationships (with your parents, directly or by proxy, with your best friend) is enhanced by the majesty of the landscape where it takes place.

Best Animated Feature Film: Turning Red

Characteristically stunning animation to tell an engaging and emotionally rich story.

Bonus:

Best Television: Only Murders in the Building, Season Two

Very fun. No more needs to be said.

Best Book (Released in 2022): The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida, by Shehan Karunatilaka.

For the longest time, I was positive my pick would be between two of my current favorite authors, who released new work early in the year, Jennifer Egan and Emily St. John Mandel. But then, as the year was about to close, I read the new work of Mr. Karunatilaka. It is funny, it is enthralling, it is informative.

Best Book (Released before 2022): The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Key Fitzgerald.

There is a reason people treat this book the way they do.

Best Album: Magnolia Stroll, by Tuba Skinny.

Best Videogame: Elden Ring, by FromSoftware; Xenoblade Chronicles 3, by Monolith Soft.

The remaining films are alphabetically listed below:
