Below is the list of the top movies I watched, roughly, in the past year. It’s coming this late because I wanted to see a few titles before closing the list. Looking back to 2012, I veered very seldomly off the beaten path, sadly.
Without further ado:
1) Seeking a Friend for the End of the World
Delicate story. As usual, sci-fi movies (yes, this is one) allow the storyteller to create a window to look into rarely seen aspects of our humanity.
2) Argo
Amazing thriller, but its main strength is how well it deals with its sub-text. It’s a great comment on storytelling.
3) Flight
Denzel Washington at his best working with a great character.
4) The Secret World of Arrietty
If there is not such thing as a “Miyazaki touch”, there should be.
5) Cloud Atlas
I still don’t think I understand it, but I don’t feel I have to.
A Tarantino film, even when flawed, still rocks!
Best romantic comedy in years, made more special by the cast.
One has only to look at my TV lineup to see that I love a procedural. And this one is great.
9) Lincoln
Out of this whole list, there is no other movie that my head screams “masterpiece” any louder. But my heart is not fully convinced.
10) Polisse
Not an easy film to sit through, but extremely rewarding.
