Decision to Leave: Park Chan-wook’s film elegantly mixes a mystery with romance, as it tells the story of a police detective investigating a possible murder and becoming obsessed with the dead man’s younger wife, possibly a suspect. The mystery is engaging enough, but their interaction gets quite touching and emotional as the film goes on; the combination is certainly effective. It helps immensely that the two main performers are excellent: Park Hae-il plays the cop as a troubled, intelligent, and sensitive man; Tang Wei plays the woman, a constant cipher, also both very smart and troubled; it’s no wonder the characters get, on some level, attracted to each other, and the performers play off one another quite beautifully. Park, alongside cinematographer Kim Ji-yong and editor Kim Sang-beom, finds a number of visual solutions that are used sparingly but enrich the film tremendously from an aesthetic point of view. Very solid use of music as well.
