The Woman Who Ran: calling Hong Sang-soo’s drama minimalist is understating the case. As the film follows a woman making a tour visiting old friends while the husband is away on a business trip, it is barely telling a story. Not much can be perceived about the characters, either, as the (very long) conversations they have are all very easygoing and trivial. The performances are effective but very subdued; Kim Min-hee, as the protagonist, and Seo Young-hwa, Song Seon-mi, and Kim Sae-byuk, as her trio of friends, are all quite OK. Aesthetically, the film is very simple: barely any music and a very quiet camera (the major exception being the use of zoom-ins by cinematographer Kim Su-min to reframe some of the conversations, which are frankly not all that attractive.)
