The Good Girls: Alejandra Márquez Abella’s film follows a pampered housewife in early 1980s Mexico; she is the leader of her cadre of businessmen’s wives, but an incoming economic crisis shakes the whole of her universe. Ilse Salas is very good as the protagonist, a spoiled and glamorous woman, filled with prejudice, who is slowly unraveling. Flavio Medina plays her husband, a businessman lost in the new situation. Paulina Gaitan plays a new wife on the block, looked down on because of her husband’s work and her own origins. The performances are all quietly effective. Editor Miguel Schverdfinger’s work builds on her confusion and lack of direction. Costume designer Annai Ramos’ work is instrumental in both showcasing the era and defining the characters.
