Brainstorm: Laís Bodanzky’s film tells the story of a middle-class kid with a classic teenage rebel bent who is institutionalized by his hardline parents, certain he is a drug addict. It may sound much like a certain 1970s classic (among others), but it’s actually inspired by real-life events. Moment to moment, it’s energetic and powerful, but as a whole, the film is exceedingly episodic, more interested in revealing a hard truth (that the last thing on the institutions’ minds is the interns’ recovery) than in properly telling a story. Rodrigo Santoro plays the young man who goes through hell, and it’s a fine performance. Othon Bastos and Cássia Kiss, both OK, play the misguided parents. Editors Letizia Caudullo and Jacopo Quadri move quickly, creating the energy (with the essential support of cinematographer Hugo Kovensky’s handheld camera) and showcasing the protagonist’s disorientation. The music, by André Abujamra and Arnaldo Antunes, also plays an important role in that.
