Asphalt Burning: Hallvard Bræin’s third film in the franchise moves further and further away from the first two: the comedy is front-and-center, and the racing takes a bit of a backseat. The story remains beside the point, but every character in this series strongly believes that all issues are solved by winning a race, and that’s all one needs to know about their motivations. The pace is uneven, as the race itself is restricted to the climax and the comedy put in its place mostly doesn’t land; there are also more examples of preposterously fake stunts (and the special effects are very sub-par) and a distracting number of unmatching shots in the action sequences (let’s just say the weather was changing radically on a dime). Anders Baasmo Christiansen and Ida Husøy’s performances are OK, as those are less comedic; no one else leaves a good impression. At least, cinematographer Askild Vik Edvardsen continues to capture the stunning landscape well.
