It’s a running tradition already. Once more, I’ll cast a fictional ballot for many awards (I’m going to restrict myself to the guild awards, as well as the Oscars); like I did last year, a note: I’m not a member of any guild, so this is merely my opinion on the matter. It’s not who I think will receive the award, merely who I think should. (It’s also unideal, since I haven’t seen a number of the nominees.) The full list […]

Eu Não Quero Voltar Sozinho (I Don’t Want to Go Back Alone): this delicate, lovely short by Daniel Ribeiro, deserves to be seen. (It’s in Portuguese, but subtitles are available.) After winning many awards worlwide, it was expanded by the director into a wonderful feature, The Way He Looks (even thought the literal title translation actually is “Today I Want to Go Back Alone”; the title change is meaningful).

Despite (or because of) the many times I have mentioned how great 2013 was for film, at some point I just need to let go and move on to 2014. The Oscars ceremony last night seems the perfect reason to do so.

As I did last year, these would be my votes (which film or candidate, given the universe of the nominees, I believe should win), not who I think will win. (That post will come later.) I’m not giving my vote unless I’ve seen most nominees in a given category, and I’ll update this post if I’m able (or willing) to change my vote. The Best Picture award, unlike the others, is voted in a preferential ballot; therefore, all the nominees are […]

I don’t usually re-post columns by other bloggers; not because there aren’t worthy reads, but because there are just too many of them. There is one yearly column, however, that I think deserves to be singled out

The full list of nominees for the American Society of Cinematographers can be seen here. The ASC Awards will be presented on February 1st. One of the greatest evidence of how crowded 2013 was with great films (along with the tie at the PGA Awards), a 3-way tie produced an unusual seven nominees, and all of them are great, deserving work. Best Cinematography: Sean Bobbitt for 12 Years a Slave The camera work of Sean Bobbit is simply beautiful; […]

The full list of nominees for the Writers Guild Awards can be seen in their official website (or, alternatively, here). The WGA will be presented on February 1st. The WGA has strict rules of eligibility which usually keeps some of the best works in the sidelines. Nevertheless, more often than not there are enough good screenplays to make sure the field is interesting. (Note: I didn’t have the opportunity to see one of the nominees, Lone Survivor, yet.) Best Original Screenplay: […]
