Bottoms: Emma Seligman’s over-the-top high school comedy tells the story of two lesbian friends who, not wanting to end high school as virgins, form a fight club for women as a way to conquer their objects of desire. While the film has its heart in the right place, aiming to empower women and queers, its story and characters are so absurd that the film never feels earnest. The humour is hit-and-miss, but mostly misses. Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri play the two friends, the first a firebrand, the second a bit mellower; they are fine in their roles. Marshawn Lynch, as one of their teachers, seems more like a stunt casting choice, as his acting is stunted. Nicholas Galitzine, as the infantilized football star, and Miles Fowler, as his second in command and main antagonist, are annoyingly outrageous. Below the line, the expressive costume design, by designer Eunice Jera Lee, is the star.
