The Divine Sarah Bernhardt: one would be excused, after watching Guillaume Nicloux’s biopic of Sarah Bernhardt, for thinking that her fame comes from her liberal love life, her extensive roster of famous writers as friends, and her exotic pets. Tepid and dull, the film mostly looks at two episodes of her life, neither related to her career nor particularly insightful. Sandrine Kiberlain plays the title character in a competent but unremarkable performance (even if the main issue lies with the character as written). Laurent Lafitte plays the man she is in love with and with whom she has an on-again, off-again affair; again, it’s a serviceable performance. Costume design (by Anaïs Romand) and art direction (by Olivier Radot) are solid but unremarkable.
