Mars Express: this animation, by Jérémie Périn, follows a detective who, alongside her android partner, is looking for a missing student on Mars. This world has many kinds of artificial intelligence beings, and explores, as good sci-fi usually does, the relationship that mankind has with technology. That does not sacrifice an entertaining plot, made even more interesting by an engaging, flawed protagonist. Léa Drucker plays her, a no-nonsense, troubled investigator with a clearly problematic relationship with robots; Daniel Njo Lobé plays her partner, an android with a sincere caring for her; Mathieu Amalric plays a wealthy client. Visually, the world-building is as rich as the conceptual characterization of this time and place; character design is varied, rich, and imaginative. Composers Fred Avril and Philippe Monthaye’s musical score is quietly modern, appropriate for the setting.
