Fifth about The Seventh

We Believe You (On Vous Croit)

We Believe You: very tight and emotionally intense, this drama by Charlotte Devillers and Arnaud Dufeys essentially shows a judicial audience, with very little around it and very little extraneous information, a discussion of the custody of two children. The mother is clearly distressed about the situation, and the two kids seem even more so. Myriem Akheddiou plays the mother, hanging by a thread emotionally. The other performances are also charged, but naturally don’t reach the same emotional highs. The film is shot by cinematographer Pépin Struye in very tight shots and in a claustrophobic aspect ratio. It says there is nothing beyond this decision; everything else doesn’t matter. In such a dialogue-heavy film with tight framing, it’s a great choice to also give the listeners quite a bit ot time, as their reactions to what is being said are often as relevant as the words themselves (Nicolas Bier is the editor).
