Fifth about The Seventh

Love in the City (L’Amore in Città)

Love in the City: anthology films are generally uneven by default, as the contrasting styles and storylines are actually the objective. This one, a docudrama ostensibly about love in Rome (but in general, mostly about how impoverished and dilapidated the city was), which seems to be hard to find, mixes a pair of lighthearted takes (even if they are more about lust than love) with a few sadder pieces (generally about its absence, and the despair that may come out ot it). Federico Fellini directs the most whimsical episode, about a journalist who conjures the weirdest story as he investigates a matrimony agency. Carlo Lizzani’s episode looks into prostitution. Michelangelo Antonioni interviews women who attempted suicide due to love mishaps. Francesco Maselli and Cesare Zavattini tell the sad story of a single mother from Palermo. Dino Risi’s segment shows the activity of a dance hall, and Alberto Lattuada’s, the very typical Italian men’s reactions to belle donne. Composer Mario Nascimbene’s score is very varied, matching each episode’s mood, but always very interesting.
