Fifth about The Seventh

Public Toilet Africa (Amansa Tiafi)

Public Toilet Africa: it is a bold attempt, but Kofi Ofosu-Yeboah’s multi-threaded narrative doesn’t quite work. The main focus is on a purported revenge tale, centered on the striking Briggitte Appiah, tall, skinny, and dressed in curve-fitting all-black; the particulars of the mission are never clear, however. It doesn’t help matters that it splits its time with a social critique of sorts, done mostly through some wonderfully droll narration. Both parts have potential, but the whole is confusing. The acting is very iffy: Appiah abuses the silent type, taking her reticence to a complete lack of expression. Ricky Kofi Adelayitar and Brimah Watara, as the drunk former cops who are on the run, fare better with their constant chat, even if their segments slow things down considerably. The Afrobeat music used here and there enhances the film’s local taste.
