The 33rd Annual Producers Guild Awards ceremony will take place Saturday, March 19th, 2022.
As I have been doing for a few years, as we get into the awards season, I’ll post the fictional ballots for some of the guild awards, showing what my vote would be if I had one. I will, as a rule, abstain from my fictional vote if I haven’t seen at least half of the nominees. And to be perfectly clear, I’m not a member of any of these guilds and organizations.
The list of nominees can be seen here.
Out of all the guilds, this one presents the hardest challenge to come up with a vote. When one is awarding the work of the producer, what is the metric? Is it the highest box office? Best return on investment? The film that mixes the best on each specific creative field? The project that overcomes the hardest challenges to come to life? Simply the “best film”, whatever that means?
Here it goes:
For starters, a very entertaining film. The pieces are all in place: two winning young performers as the protagonists, a large supporting cast, great production values (costumes, production design, cinematography, music).Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures: Yvett Merino and Clark Spencer, for Encanto
Encanto is the animated film, out of the nominated ones, that presents the best mix: an entertaining and touching story, good music, on-point voice acting, and visuals. (Not seen: Sing 2.)Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures: producers of The Rescue
Out of an impressively strong and diverse stable of nominees, The Rescue is the one that tells its story in a more thrilling manner. It’s also the film that brings more hope. (Not seen: Writing with Fire.)
