The Treasure: there is a certain dry irony in the way Corneliu Porumboiu’s drama unfurls; that makes this tale of greed one that is certainly different than most, and it is the bias on how the genre generally goes that keeps the tension elevated, in particular later in the film. That said, it is a ponderous film as it quietly observes its characters from a distance, as they go on about their plans, mundane activities, and bicker with each other. The acting is low-key: Adrian Purcarescu and Corneliu Cozmei are quietly fine, but Toma Cuzin plays the protagonist with a subtle determination as he goes on his seemingly impossible quest. Cinematographer Tudor Mircea captures it all very elegantly with an almost still camera and lights the night scenes beautifully.
