Fifth about The Seventh

Army of Thieves

Army of Thieves: maybe the raison d’être of Matthias Schweighöfer’s heist movie is lost to those that haven’t watched the film this is a prequel to. Maybe this is all there is to it. Either way, while the central pair of characters share some good chemistry (Schweighöfer himself can get annoying with his hysterics, while Nathalie Emmanuel can do no wrong; their awkward banter is charming), everything else is dull. The supporting characters are your run-of-the-mill colorful (Ruby O. Fee is the best of the bunch, but that’s no meaningful achievement, in this case); the heists are unimaginative and unexciting; the characters’ motivations and spur-of-the-moment decisions rarely make any sense. Aesthetically, the film is slick but unremarkable, making pedestrian use of the film’s locations. The safes are very beautifully designed and may be the film’s highlight.
