Misbehaviour: there’s no denying that Philippa Lowthorpe’s account of this story has an enormous heart and that it’s in the right place; however, the film lacks focus, which robs the film of some of its strength and thematic relevance. It also doesn’t allow for rich character development or an exploration of them. A whole storyline lacks relevance within the large context. The film, in any case, has a light and easy pace, making it a reasonably pleasurable watch, even if one without any surprises or emotional highs. Acting is uneven: Keira Knightley (as the heady protester), Jessie Buckley (as the heady protester), and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (as one of the contestants) are fine but unchallenged. Greg Kinnear and Rhys Ifans, however, lean more heavily into the comedy and both chew the scenery. The film’s look are competent but indifferent.
