Fifth about The Seventh

20,000 Species of Bees (20.000 Especies de Abejas)

20,000 Species of Bees: the tale told by Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren in this drama is quite touching and delicate. Its protagonist is Cocó, an 8-year-old who goes with their mother, brother, and sister to their ancestral village for a vacation; besides the familial drama involving her mother and grandmother, Cocó struggles with their own identity. The journey is heartbreaking because one knows today’s intolerance and how that will play out in the future, even if the film and its characters are quite acceptive. Sofía Otero gives a wonderful performance beyond her young years as Cocó; sweet, sad, quietly expressive, and fully engaging. Patricia López Arnaiz plays beautifully the loving but oblivious mother. Ane Gabarain, as an understanding grandaunt, also gives a nicely layered performance. Cinematographer Gina Ferrer’s images are intimate, just what the story calls for. The pace given by editor Raúl Barreras is quite good.
