The Wife: the storyline of Björn L. Runge’s drama, plur or minus some particulars, seems to be a rehash of other films; it’s not a bad story, and its central theme is one that needs to be looked at, but it gives the film a sense of reheating that reduces its interest. By the other hand, the title role is defended very solidly by Glenn Close, who creates a character who is strong and stoic; it’s a quiet, dignified performance, one that justifies the film. Her counterpart, Jonathan Pryce, also gives a good performance as the laureate peacock of a writer; Annie Starke also leaves a good impression as the younger version of Close’s character. The film’s looks is quite simple, without bells-and-whistles.
