Fifth about The Seventh

Thoroughbreds

Thoroughbreds: Cory Finley’s film tells the story of a pair of rich, spoiled girls, former friends who rekindle their friendship, only to realize they must commit a crime to be true to themselves. Or something. The film thinks it’s pretty smart. It’s not. The film thinks it is making biting social commentary. It’s not. The film thinks it’s incredibly satirical. It’s not. The film thinks it’s making an interesting character study. It’s not. What it actually is is a dull, superficial, tired experience. The film sadly wastes its young cast, both the two upstart female leads (Olivia Cooke, as the smart psychopath, and Anya Taylor-Joy, as the less smart one) and the gone-too-soon Anton Yelchin (who plays a full-of-wind drug dealer). At least editor Louise Ford keeps it snappy and short.
