Bergman: A Year in a Life: Jane Magnusson paints a very rich, complex portrait of the subject of her documentary, Ingmar Bergman. The film courageously shines a light in some of his more famous flaws, almost to the point where one dislikes the man while loving the artist and his work. His complexity certainly percolated into many masterpieces, and this honest look at him helps to see the reason why. There is a variety of interviewees that give great insight of the man, but it’s the phenomenal archival material (of many of his films, interviews, backstage moments) that makes the difference, giving vivid, convincing evidence to what is being said.
