Captain America: The Winter Soldier: this film’s story is relatively grounded (for the genre, of course; that’s not to say that aspects of it are not properly outlandish); the main character is appealing, for being so earnest and vulnerable. Likewise, the Russo Brothers shoot the action scenes, mostly, in a gritty way, appropriate for the nature of the main characters and villains. It’s a good-looking cast, even if they don’t have all that much to do; the recurring cast (Scarlett […]

The Incredibles: an immensely fun film. It all starts with the great story by director Brad Bird, which has recognizable elements but is also very fresh; it’s also rather layered. The sense of humor is low-key; it’s present in the dialogue, character design and in the frame, and much of it comes from references about culture in general, superheroes, Pixar itself. It’s extremely well-done, drawn in a clean, retro style that fits the story being told; the character design is […]

Thor: The Dark World: a coherent story in films of this genre is almost a luxury (even thought it, of course, can happen), but perhaps this time the writers went too far in that regard. They have, however, rightfully concluded that the titular character (however well-played by Chris Hemsworth, for what it is) isn’t interesting enough by itself; it is, by the other hand, a good straight man for other characters (that’s why it fits so well in The Avengers). […]

The Wolverine: the choices of playing this over a smaller scale and setting were wise. The main character is conflicted and interesting enough and the intimate scenes resonate (for the genre); smaller action scenes make sense, as well as being a relief compared to the overblown sequences from other recent movies of the genre. However, the excess of villains muddy the waters, making the proceedings more confusing than they could be. While Hugh Jackman by now knows how to play […]

The Dark Knight Rises: as I revisited this film, I was impressed at how little action (relatively; for films of this genre) there is. The focus is on the characters and the story, which are well in concert with the essence of the main character. Therefore, the whole thing feels organic and closing the circle, the right way to go. The attractive cast is very solid, Anne Hathaway and Marion Cotillard being the stand-outs. Production values are great, and visually […]

Man of Steel: the main problem of this film is that, however iconic he may be, Superman is uninteresting as a character, particularly by himself. While some efforts are made, the gravitas of this straight-as-an-arrow man is simply too much and the general graveness becomes dull. Henry Cavill seems to be, indeed, made of steel, but the rest of the cast is interesting and solid. Visually, the choice of going desaturated, shaky, gritty is consistent with the way the character […]

Iron Man Three: an excessively busy story (having to contend with being a sequel to not one but two movies) with a lot of sound and fury, but not much else. The main selling point continues to be the main character (and, perhaps more importantly, how he’s played by Robert Downey Jr.) and how he doesn’t take anything seriously. In fact, the whole film doesn’t take itself too seriously, and this sense of humor is most welcome. Entertaining enough, if […]

The Avengers: a review of this film only reassures what was thought before: this is a purely entertaining film. This is meant a bit as a backhanded compliment: there is nothing wrong in just trying to be fun (and this film is, in spades), but aiming somewhat higher is always welcome. Extremely well done, for what it’s supposed to be. The cast is very good in playing the one-noted characters; not having to spend much time introducing the characters, but […]
