Morning Glory (2010)

Morning Glory: yet another case where you know exactly what you’re getting (which is something cute but common) and is neither surprised nor disappointed in the process.

Due Date: comedies are hard to criticize, because if you laugh, the other elements can be thrown overboard. Well, it was not the case this time. So the absence of laughs just makes it clear that this film brings nothing to the genre of buddy-road comedy. What a waste of the cast.

It’s Kind of a Funny Story: well, it actually ain’t, not in a ha-ha sense anyway. But that’s fine, as the movie works in its intended level: as a lighthearted, fantasious reminder that it’s OK to cry for help every once in a while, that a gentle push can work and that generally it’s not really that bad. Cute.

‘Tamara Drewe’: curiously unpleasant movie. Again that movie-killing combination of unpleasant and uninteresting characters, and to top that a dull story.

Easy A: back to the 80’s. It’s pretty harmless fun, and it wears its origins in its sleeves. It actually goes even further and, like the very personable and charismatic protagonist, sews it in its chest. (And how come it makes it so easy to hate the religious nuts?)

You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger: not much sound or fury, but indeed it signifies nothing. I can’t remember another Allen movie where the characters were so unpleasant (that’s not a problem in itself) and uninteresting (this is!). Not even a decent zinger in the whole thing.

The Kids Are All Right: nice movie. Good acting by everyone involved, the story was interesting. It’s not “about” homosexuality, as some would like to make us believe, but about people. I liked the road chosen at the end: it confirms what the focus of the movie was.

Cyrus: OK, I suppose. A bit boring in the middle, in spite of good characters and a decent story. Moderately funny, not as much as the public in the show seemed to think. The camera work and the editing were, respectively, majorly and minorly annoying.

Burn After Reading: nice little farce. Great cast at the top of their game, for this kind of material. It’s not the best Coen Bros flick, but then again, it’s not supposed to be.
