Fifth about The Seventh

Burgundy

Burgundy: Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw’s pleasurable documentary set in the winemaking region follows a group of characters, all connected to the culture. The elderly owner of a very traditional winery, a young worker who acts much older than he is, a wine critic who measures every aspect of his life against wine, a maitre d’ nearing retirement, and an apprentice sommelier struggling to learn the ropes of her trade. They are all interesting to watch, but the film ultimately offers little insight into them and the business itself; it is, hence, a tasty but insubstantial experience. Dweck and Kershaw are also responsible for the cinematography, and the images they conjure showcase the beauty and charm of the region and the many interiors; their framing is quite elegant and unobtrusive. Editor Pauline Gaillard gives the doc a nice pace, jumping generously from one character to another, and the use of music is simply excellent.
