The Hangover Part II

January 12, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

The Hangover Part II: I remember a time when sequels were supposed to be more of the same. This one is just the same. Maybe even less of the same, since it definitely is less funny.

X-Men: First Class

January 12, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

X-Men: First Class: a decent entry to the series, better than it deserved after the last two, in fact. It’s good to see that they kept some thematic unity with the first two movies. The cast choice was inspired; so was the use of less known characters, making the reboot less tired than it could be.

The Tree of Life

January 12, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

The Tree of Life: a stunning piece of art, make no mistake. Not an easy one and I don’t think it should be. Visually wonderful. The narrative is rather unusual; however, it’s my opinion that it works like that. It’s a movie that need to be seen many times, on many different moods, moments, places and times of the day: something new will be noticed each time.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

January 12, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides: a sad addition to the series. Dark and murky, uninspired actions sequences, bad use of the characters. It’s a waste of such a nice cast. In fact, the only thing that is somewhat inspired is the Duck Soup reference (but, that’s mostly because of the source).

Midnight in Paris

January 12, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Midnight in Paris: a good showcase of the difference between originality and freshness. Not (quite) an original to Woody Allen, this is still fresh, funny, interesting things to say and good acting all around. One can see why someone would fall in love with Marion Cotillard’s character, as well as with Paris. The dialogue sounds a bit too direct, didatic even, early on, but it goes away after a while. Good stuff.

Hanna (2011) – Revisit

January 12, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Hanna: the previous discomfort with the story continues. However, watch again the lovely camera work was a great pleasure, and I noticed some more shots that I enjoyed. (Granted, I’m a sucker for long takes with moving camera, particularly when done with good reason and elegance, like here.) See what I wrote previously: Hanna

Young Mr. Lincoln

January 12, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Young Mr. Lincoln: in many ways, a typical Fordian movie, particular in his mix of respect and amusement for the old American ways. Almost refreshing is his portrait of a man who, nowadays, would be treated in a God-like manner, showing some traits that could be considered weaknesses. But it also lacks some of his usual muscularity. (And, neither here not there, but Fonda’s makeup was a bit distracting early on.)

RoboCop (1987)

January 12, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

RoboCop: with very dated ultra-violence and special effects (it doesn’t look at all different from what Harryhausen did 40 years before), the saving grace would be at least a well-told or interesting story. Alas, we get neither; nor characters.

Moon

January 12, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Moon: a good example of how a sci-fi movie doesn’t have to be an effects spectacle. A simple, good story will usually do the trick quite well. When you have someone like Sam Rockwell playing your lead, even better. Very effective, and as most good sci-fi, with something to say.
