Father Mother Sister Brother: uneven as episodic films can often be, Jim Jarmusch’s triptych looks into three families, as estranged members meet in separate episodes. The first two have the most recognizable faces: Tom Waits plays the father of Mayim Bialik and Adam Driver in the first, while Charlotte Rampling plays the mother of Cate Blanchett and Vicky Krieps. In both cases, however, the meetings are uneasy, cordial but loveless; they aren’t generally insightful, entertaining, or emotionally engaging. The third episode casts two comparatively unknown faces, Indya Moore and Luka Sabbat, as two siblings who meet to visit their deceased parents’ apartment for the last time; it’s certainly the sweetest of the three episodes. Blanchett and Driver have the most fun with their performances, playing two awkward figures. Beyond the thematic connection, there are a few arbitrary elements that pop up in all stories, without adding anything to any of them. Good work by directors of photography Frederick Elmes and Yorick Le Saux.
