Ted

January 14, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

‎Ted: preposterous setup, stupid story, absurd climax; and yet, very funny at times. This is the perfect example of why comedies are so tough to judge and recommend; humor is something very personal, and hard to resist (in spite of itself sometimes). If one transcends the laughs, it’s a great one. Sadly, this one is not one of those.

The Artist – Revisit

January 14, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

The Artist: not much new to talk about this film. There are so many great little moments, so many inspired instances of blocking and nice shots. All of that helps to make a film that, above all, is very entertaining. It’s a pity that people can be turned away by its stylistic choices. See what I wrote before: The Artist

Magic Mike

January 13, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Magic Mike: entertaining, however somewhat unimaginative story. The film rises above that because of the twist of using male characters, because it’s well-told by a director that is willing to take risks and a cast that works very well.

Prometheus

January 13, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Prometheus: while the questions posed here are certainly provocative, the answers provided are not as interesting; nevertheless, they still raise this film above the generic space horror. Everything looks absolutely fantastic, and the cast, for the most part, sells everything well. The one exception is Noomi Rapace, which is a big issue, as she is the one of most to sell.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

January 13, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

‎Seeking a Friend for the End of the World: science fiction films very often provide great windows into human nature (make no mistake, this is a very low key sci-fi, but it is one), because they take us to a extreme setting. This one does so with delicacy. Steve Carell, as many other comedians before him, proves himself up to the task of a more serious role.

To Rome With Love

January 13, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

To Rome With Love: a bit of a disjointed mess, with the inspired moments (they exist) few and far between, some of them overplayed simply because there was nothing else to fill the time. The cast seems mostly wasted with the lazy writing (some of the story lines could have easily been given more richness). The star, of course, is Rome, beautifully shot.

Brave

January 13, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Brave: nice little story, with a meaningful theme. Visually, it’s a beauty to behold, both in character design and in world design. If there is a weakness in the storytelling, it’s in the humorous moments; not because they are bad, but because they don’t fit the whole as well.

Peace, Love & Misunderstanding

January 13, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Peace, Love & Misunderstanding: despite the interesting (if archetypical) characters and relationships, this film suffers from the arbitrary and artificial starting point. Because that feels so unnatural, what follows does not really register as being too sincere either; otherwise, the film could have stricken some emotional chords.

Lola Versus

January 13, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Lola Versus: the cast seems to be sleepwalking through this film, but they can’t hard be blamed. The screenplay is lifeless, senseless, inorganic; the characters, flat and boring. So I won’t be misunderstood: this is a very weak film.
