Kristopher Tapley’s The top 10 shots of 2012: part one

February 13, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

This column by Kristopher Tapley from the blog In Contention is a favorite of mine. Every year, by the end of January, he lists his favorite shots of the previous year. He talks about them, both aesthetically and thematically, and usually brings a few words from the Director of Photography responsible for them. Agree or disagree, it’s always an enriching read. I encourage you to see for yourself in the link below. The top 10 shots of 2012: part one.

The Long Goodbye

February 13, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

The Long Goodbye: for the most part, an interesting if somewhat offbeat re-imagining of the story. It’s a convoluted story as only Raymond Chandler (and Ross Macdonald as well as a few others, but who is counting?) could tell, but some of it is lost in the translation. The general tone and pace are justified, but the central character became less clear in the process. Of course, almost everything directed by Robert Altman deserves a visit. (As a sidenote: I […]

Casting a Ballot – 2012 Oscars

February 12, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

And so we get to the big one, for now. As a reminder, these would be my votes (who, given the universe of the nominees, I believe should win), not who I think will win. (That post will come later.) I’m not giving my vote unless I’ve seen all nominees in a given category, and I’ll update this post if I’m able to do that at a later date. The Best Picture award, unlike the others, is voted in a […]

Mirror Mirror (2012)

February 11, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Mirror Mirror: a somewhat new paint to a (very) classic car. Interestingly, one of two released within roughly a month. There isn’t, however, much to be seen here. The humour is quite low-key, acting in general is phoned-in, and the look is curiously artificial and cheap-looking. Not that it matters much, but it’s the best of the two. Side Effects (2012)

February 10, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Side Effects: effective film that is not quite what I expected it to be, and maybe the better for it (if for not other reason then catching me off guard). Capably directed and shot by Steven Soderbergh (the colors, however, are a bit on the ugly side), who above all gets a valiant piece of acting by Rooney Mara. The writing is engaging, if perhaps a bit too smart.

Head Over Heels – Full Short

February 9, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Head Over Heels: the fifth nominee for Best Animated Short is a bit rough-looking, but very inventive nevertheless, both visually and (what matters most) story-wise. Enjoy! (Sadly, the video is no longer available.)

Adam and Dog – Full Short

February 9, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Adam and Dog: yet another of the 5 nominees for Best Animated Short. Nice, simple story with good-looking stylized visuals. Enjoy! (Sadly, the viceo is no longer available.)
