The Simpsons: The Longest Daycare – Full Short

February 9, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

The Longest Daycare: While I’m not generally a big fan of The Simpsons, this short, also nominated for the Best Animated Short, is clever and funny. Follow this link and enjoy The Simpsons: The Longest Daycare! (This link becomes unavailable every once in a while, so if you have a hard time getting to this short, post a comment and let me know.)

House of Cards – Season One

February 7, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

House of Cards – Season One: the high quality of this TV series (technically, it’s something else, a web-series perhaps, but let’s call it that for simplicity sake) starts with the great cast and solid writing. The main strength of the writing comes from the structure and the sordid but not particularly far-fetched story. The choice of having the main character break the fourth wall is somewhat daring but very successful: the main character, and therefore the whole story, would not be […]

Fresh Guacamole – Full Short

February 7, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Fresh Guacamole: This inventive short has a nomination for Best Animated Short. While it’s not as touching as the other one I shared recently, still deserves to be seen. Enjoy!

Stand Up Guys

February 6, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Stand Up Guys: while it’s hard for a film with a cast of this quality to be completely bad, this one comes dangerously close. The main problem is the writing: the story is all over the place, as is the tone; the characters are badly developed. That would make a miracle if even these actors could create something; that is not what happened here, with the acting sometimes hammy, sometimes in auto-pilot.

Casting a ballot – WGA Awards 2012

February 4, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Next stop in the 2012 awards tour is the WGA. It should be noted that I have not actually read the nominees, simply watched their rendition on the screen. (Not all of them, sadly. I’ll try to watch the one straggler soon, thought.) It’s a great list, incidentally, particularly for Original Screenplay. (Comparing that list with this one will see a lot of names in common; that is not a coincidence. Good writing is the basis of good filmmaking, and […]

Casting a ballot – DGA Awards 2012

February 2, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

In the continuing efforts to opine about the awards season, the next stop is the Directors Guild Association. Here is their list of nominees. I have seen all five films this time, and my thoughts on each of them can be found elsewhere. There is one that I truly don’t believe is worthy of the honor this time. With that introduction out of the way, my ballot would be: Best Director – Feature Film: Steven Spielberg for Lincoln I’m also glad […]

Walt Disney’s Paperman – Full short

January 30, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Paperman: Among the loveliest moments I spent at the movie theaters last year. Those who read the full list of Oscar nominees or my quick thoughts about them may remember the name. Those who watched Wreck-It Ralph may have seen it. Either way, I encourage you to watch Paperman. (Edited: Sadly, it seems the short was taken off the air.)

The Impossible

January 28, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

The Impossible: in the best way possible, this is a horrible experience. With great earnestness from the whole cast and terrific recreation of the tsunami, there is a great sense of the reality of the account (at least the broad strokes; details are definitely expected to be changed.) The music could have been less bombastic, the images are already strong enough. (One note on the marketing: No matter it’s a “true story”, heavily spoiling the film on the trailers is […]

Casting a ballot – SAG Awards 2012

January 26, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Let me start by saying that I’m not a member of SAG (or any other of the organizations I’ll be casting a ballot over time, for that matter), and if I was, I probably would not make my vote public. Sadly, there were a few performances I didn’t have the opportunity to see yet. Looking at the full list of nominees, there’s only one I think doesn’t belong, so this is a strong group. With that introduction out of the […]
