Lee Daniels’ The Butler

August 21, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Lee Daniels’ The Butler: there is no denying this is an important film, due to the issues (the civil rights movement, the racial divide) it touches. However, Lee Daniels seemed content in making an important movie and not an engaging one. It resembles a superficial travelogue through the fight against racism and, as such, it’s emotionally uninvolving. The title character is, more often than not, a passive observant of the action (as his station required), a supporting player in his […]

Hamlet (1996)

August 19, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Hamlet: there isn’t any need to spend time writing about Shakespeare’s play; nevertheless, I will. A wonderful, sorrowful tale that is both grand and intimate; its rich characters cover a wide spectrum of human nature and interact quite beautifully; most famously, however, the speeches and lines are pure poetry, a pleasure to listen to (even if their meaning is not completely grasped at times). The cast is, of course, a crucial element (perhaps here more than most times, as a […]

Brute Force

August 18, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Brute Force: strong drama, earnest and convincing that the characters belong in the setting. The good writing, with a story that sounds possible and has something to say, however, doesn’t extend to allow the central characters to have an arch. The acting is solid: both Burt Lancaster (not using his usual charming presence) and Hume Cronyn are standouts. Visually, the film certainly has many interesting moments in well-composed shots. This film is a grim experience, but a good one.

The Spectacular Now

August 16, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

The Spectacular Now: while not a wholly original story or set of characters, the touching plot moves ahead so organically, so enthrallingly, that the familiarity is not a problem at all. Topping the strong writing is the phenomenal acting of the central pair, Miles Teller and, in particular, Shailene Woodley; both are earnest, rich, human performances. James Ponsoldt chose to let many crucial scenes slowly breathe; visually, that means those scenes unfurl in a single shot. They are not showy […]

In a World…

August 15, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

In a World…: the (few, but at least existing) funny bits of this comedy are buried in the quirky setting and characters and excessively busy plot. The man-child (or, as the case may be here, woman-child) is used often, and for good reason: it allows for interesting character development. However, that was not the case here. The result is that any humanity that the story could have is absent.

Elysium (2013)

August 13, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Elysium: a typically grim tale (for a sci-fi movie) that has enough of both unique and the usual elements to feel fresh but not overwhelming. As it’s often the case with films of this genre, the story also serves as a comment on present times; here, it’s somewhat heavy-handed, regardless of how one feels about what is being said. Acting is somewhat uneven: Matt Damon is dependable and Sharlto Copley creates an interesting villain; Jodie Foster, by the other hand, is […]

The Italian Job (1969)

August 7, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

The Italian Job: a charming, but ultimately a bit vacuous and dated, mix of naïveté and light farce. The cast tries their best but with characters that are that plain and uninteresting, they have their work cut out for them. The plot, save for one or two aspects, has been done with more tension and strength elsewhere. Nevertheless, the chase scenes are nice to watch, for what they are.

2 Guns

August 4, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

2 Guns: a mismatch of two halves that don’t even work that well in the first place. As an action movie, it’s exceedingly violent and the action sequences are tired; as a comedy it fares a bit better, thanks to a decent chemistry between Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, but the banter only goes so far. Stuck somewhere in the middle is a busy, senseless plot that is an excuse to said violence and banter. It looks slick, that much […]

Fruitvale Station

August 3, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Fruitvale Station: well-grounded by two solid, modulated performances by Michael B. Jordan and Olivia Spencer, this is a sad, touching drama. The main character is well written, complex and flawed but undeserving of his fate. The story is a simple one, but going any further than it did would reduce its impact. Shot simply and effectively, one good example of the story justifying the style. As it’s usually the case with reality-based tales, how accurate a portrait of the actual […]
