Hannah and Her Sisters

September 12, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Hannah and Her Sisters: the episodic structure of this film breaks down the flow of the story and makes it less pleasurable to watch; it ends up weighting on the dialogues, that end up being overly expository at times. In the same vein, the humorous moments feel tacked on, inorganic. By the other hand, the stories told are, for the most part, interesting ones, and the gallery of characters, rich and definitely well-defended by the cast: Mia Farrow has the less […]

Argo – Revisit

September 10, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Argo: a revisit doesn’t show much that wasn’t known before. An entertaining thriller made with a lot of confidence. The basis of it all is a good story, one of those that are to fantastical to not be true. (A note: it’s somewhat irrelevant how close to fact this is, since this is not a documentary. Entertainment is the main objective; enlightenment comes second.) The light tone at times add to the entertainment value, and the excellent cast is a […]

Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead

September 8, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead: visually, this film embraces the idea of being filmed theater with gusto and, while it is by design, it’s also unappealing. The strength, however, lies mostly on the writing: it’s a fascinating exercise, a derivative work that makes fun at the original work without taking it lightly; it’s also, more relevantly, very funny and entertaining without being devoid of meaning. Gary Oldman and Tim Roth read the dialogue brilliantly and create characters that, even if […]

The World’s End

September 6, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

The World’s End: here’s a film that is as silly as they come and embraces it to entertaining results. The excellent cast (Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Martin Freedman in particular) is fun to watch as they build their characters somewhat slowly, but surely, to the point where they are cared for. That is somewhat rare in comedies, but the genre is looked at mostly for laughs, and here they are present; they are the result of well-read lines, by […]

The Man Who Would Be King

September 1, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

The Man Who Would Be King: a grand old adventure which includes enough subtext to go beyond simple entertainment. After all, John Huston is behind it. It all starts with an engaging, interesting story that mixes both usual and unusual elements; the main characters are a joy to watch, partially because how they were written and partially because they are played by Michael Caine and Sean Connery. Beautifully made, top to bottom; the locations in particular are incredible.

Charley Varrick

August 31, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Charley Varrick: Walter Matthau is surprisingly good (for those used to his grumpy comedic roles) as the title character in this solid, taut film. The plot is not novel, but it unfurls in such a way that the characters have time to be showcased, even if a bit; it’s also very earnest with the brutality of the world they live in. Don Siegel was economical, also, in the way he had the movie shot; the long takes aren’t there to call […]

Closed Circuit

August 29, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Closed Circuit: an attractive cast such as this won’t often be found in a film this ineptly made, top to bottom. It all starts with a badly conceived plot, that goes from bad to worse as it advances; also, as a thriller, the thrill-wattage is very low. The actors can’t do anything with the flat, unrealistic characters. Visually, the film is uninventive in the shot selection and editing.

The Grandmaster

August 25, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

The Grandmaster: a visual masterpiece that, however, has a narrative that ends up being a bit loose. Philippe Le Sourd’s camera work is gorgeous to look at; this is clearly a film by Wong Kar Wai. Part of the beauty comes from Woo-ping Yuen’s action coreography. However, as the plot evolves, there is a lack of focus (that may, for that matter, be a problem of the shorter version, by 20 minutes); it’s hard to fault it too much, as it allows […]

Escape from Alcatraz

August 24, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Escape from Alcatraz: low-key and efficient, this film contains all the usual elements of a story of this genre, as well as some of its problems. The gallery of characters contains the usual suspects; however, there is little if any development of them. Familiarity is not a major problem, but the inability to connect to any of the characters is (they are unpleasant and uninteresting). The images are a bit too dark sometimes and, while that makes sense in the […]
