Fifth about The Seventh

Not a Hero

Not a Hero: films about children live or die depending on how engaging the kids are. The protagonist of Rima Das’ drama is at the bad end of the spectrum: spoiled and annoying, an 11-year-old boy is sent for unspecified reasons (frankly, the parents may have just wanted to be away from him for a while) to stay with his aunt in a small village. It’s hard to care for all the episodes that follow, as he tries to relate (or not) to his aunt, his classmates, and the environment; the character is simply too aggravating. That, plus the loose narrative thread, makes the pace drag (Rima Das herself edited the film). Not sure if Bhuman Bhargav Das, the actor who plays the protagonist, is to be blamed, since the issue lies on the page. In any case, in general, the film is aesthetically pedestrian.
