The Day She Returned: minimalist, HONG Sang-soo’s film follows a former movie star through one day as she gives three interviews to journalists in a café after shooting a new film after over a decade. The interviews are similar but not quite identical, and the subtle variations in the dialogue are interesting, as is the way they are used again later in the film. SONG Seon-mi plays the protagonist, and because she is front and center in nearly every frame, she does a great deal of listening as well as talking; that’s where the quiet richness of her performance appears. Every scene, essentially, plays in one single take with a nearly static camera (the film was shot and edited by HONG); it’s the definition of a visually simple movie. HONG also composed the spare musical score.
