Fifth about The Seventh

Woman Unknown (Kvinde Ukendt)

Woman Unknown: this period drama by May el-Toukhy tells the story of a maid in Copenhagen at the end of the Nazi occupation who is about to marry her boss. A chance encounter with someone from her past, and the ominous actions of the Danish Resistance against those deemed collaborators, may spell trouble. It’s a powerful, classically told story, but perhaps a tad too cold. The performances are subtle and great: Mathilde Arcel does quite a lot with very little, playing the protagonist. The work of director of photography Jasper Spanning is classic, solid, and uses precise framing and generous use of mirrors to create interesting images. The period recreation, both costume (by designer Rebecca Richmond) and art direction (by production designer Sabine Hviid), is effective but unspectacular. Editor Rasmus Stensgaard Madsen gives the film a nice pace in a film that does not overstay its welcome.
