NAZA: this documentary, by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, is indeed hard-hitting, even if the filmmakers keep it as unemotional as possible, otherwise, it could be unbearable to watch. In it, Abraham conducts a large number of anonymous interviews with members of the Israeli armed forces and intelligence services. They describe the systems in place during the war on Gaza, carried out in retaliation for the horrific terrorist attacks on 7 October 2023. Abraham doesn’t hold back, and it is particularly distressing to see self-described members of the Israeli cultural elite shut off a part of their humanity. For practical and aesthetic reasons, the interviews are conducted at night on Tel Aviv rooftops, shot by Szor and another unnamed crew member; the opposition between the serene images of people’s daily lives and the content of the interviews is quite stark. Powerful, necessary even.
