Digger: the less one knows about Alejandro González Iñárritu’s absolutely bonkers satire before watching it, the better. The eponymous character is an oil magnate with complete disregard for anything that is not his old cat and his bottom line. Nevertheless, he is forced to deal with a potential environmental disaster at one of his oil rigs. The satire is funny and pointed, and the film is energetic and entertaining. The performances are generally, and justifiably, larger-than-life: Tom Cruise plays the charismatic and crude protagonist; John Goodman plays the President; and Riz Ahmed, a scientist close to the protagonist. Cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki gives the film an odd look, but his work is undeniably very interesting. Production designers Dennis Gassner and Richard L. Johnson create a world that is kitsch and excessive, but also full of character. The sound work in this film is phenomenal, and the very unique-sounding musical score, by composer Cosmo Sheldrake, is quite interesting to listen to.
