Fifth about The Seventh

Bad Seed (Mauvaise Graine – 1934)

Bad Seed: Alexander Esway and Billy Wilder’s film (famously Wilder’s first directing credit, and allegedly a solo job in everything but name) follows a young playboy who gets mixed up with a car-stealing gang in Paris. The protagonist is a pampered young man, ambitious but not lazy, and certainly morally grey; the performance of Pierre Mingand is fine. Danielle Darrieux plays the only female gang member, and she certainly has the charm for her role. The action sequences, so to speak, have a guerrilla feeling to them and are effective. Editor Thérèse Sautereau keeps the film’s pace quick and interesting. This is an entertaining little film.
