Fifth about The Seventh

My New Friends (Les Gens d’à Côté)

My New Friends: André Téchiné’s small drama has an intriguing enough setup: a policewoman, still grieving the loss of her life partner, meets and gets close to the new neighbours, a family of three, particularly the mother and daughter. The fact that the father is a convicted Black Bloc member proves to be, expectedly, a bit of a problem. The main issue with the film, however, is that everything feels rushed and unfinished; the characters and the situation feel unexplored and unconvincing. In short, the film is unfulfilling. Isabelle Huppert, as the protagonist, gives a characteristically good performance, but the lack of depth makes it also uninteresting. Hafsia Herzi and Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, as the mother and father, are OK. Cinematographer George Lechaptois keeps the handheld camera close to the performers, but the screenplay doesn’t justify this attempt at intimacy.
