Make a Girl: YASUDA Gensho’s animation tells the story of a young boy who, after a schoolmate tells him about the benefits of having a girlfriend, creates one artificially. The film examines how that works within the context of artificial intelligence and programmed feelings, but it is very confusing about what it’s actually trying to say, to the point of creating an antagonist that belongs in another story. The characters are unengaging, cold, even if adequately performed by the voice cast: HORIE Shun plays the brilliant but awkward protagonist; TANEZAKI Atsumi plays the properly robotic girlfriend; AMAMIYA Sora and HANAZAWA Kana, two girls the protagonist is friendly with. The animation itself is distinctive but not particularly memorable.
