The Mitchells vs the Machines: Mike Rianda and Jeff Rowe’s animation is a colorful and dynamic adventure, certainly an entertaining film which, ultimately, is a bit too obvious and heavy-handed with its themes. The family at its center is quirky and charming, but far from unique as the story implies. Voice acting is quite good: stealing the show is Olivia Colman as the main villain, but Abbi Jacobson, Maya Rudolph, Danny McBride, and Rianda are very convincing and engaging as the four members of the mildly dysfunctional family. The animation has a very interesting and distinct look to it: the environments and the machines are in 3D, but the texture of the human characters seems a mix of rotoscoping with paper puppets. Editor Greg Levitan’s work is also rather kinetic, playing out the comedy to great effect.
