Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro: Miyazaki Hayao’s animated adventure is a great old-fashioned romp, filled with charming anti-heroes, entertaining sidekicks, beautiful ingénues, bumbling antagonists, nefarious villains, and international conspiracies. The story is not emotionally deep, but the journey is very entertaining. The colorful animation, in particular the character design, is very simple for present-day standards, even if the characters are (when they have to be) very distinctive from each other; in any case, the film excels in creating the beautiful, expansive environments and the dynamic action sequences. Voice performances are appropriately energetic (Yamada Yasuo, Kobayashi Kiyoshi, Ishida Taroo) or sweet (Shimamoto Sumi). Good use of music.
