The 70th Annual WGA Awards will be handed on Sunday, February 11th, 2018.
As I have been doing for a few years, as we get into the awards season, I’ll post the fictional ballots for some of the guild awards, showing what my vote would be if I had one. I will, as a rule, abstain from my fictional vote if I haven’t seen at least half of the nominees. And to be perfectly clear, I’m not a member of any of these guilds and organizations.
The list of nominees can be seen here.
Here it goes:
Documentary Screenplay: abstain (Not seen: Jane, No Stone Unturned, Oklahoma City.)
Original Screenplay: Steven Rogers, for I, Tonya
The mockumentary structure (inspired, at least partially, in real interviews) allows for the story of I, Tonya to be told in a very entertaining manner. It also allows for the main character to have a voice while still nodding to the fact that there are multiple versions to what happened.
Adapted Screenplay: Aaron Sorkin, for Molly’s Game
Aaron Sorkin mixes an entertaining story, a great character (and female, to boot, but he may have had some help here, since it’s based on a real person), snappy dialogue and non-linear structure to great success. (Not seen: Mudbound.)
