The Big Sick: Michael Showalter’s romantic comedy has a busy schedule, trying to deal with many different threads and themes at the same time and somewhat conveniently taking care of them all; even so, it manages to be a cute, feel-good experience. The central pair is charming and unusually normal-looking; Kumail Nanjiani plays, well, himself efficiently, and Zoe Kazan is also fine. The supporting cast also manages to come across nicely, with Holly Hunter and Ray Romano being the biggest names. Cinematographer Brian Burgoyne’s images are fine, serviceable but far from memorable (the genre doesn’t call for it, in any case); Robert Nassau’s editing keeps the film moving at a smart pace.
