Bridge of Spies: Steven Spielberg has a nice story in his hands, and he tells it very capably; the film, however, is uneven, with a richer first half, and it is, at times, a bit heavy-handed (accentuated by Thomas Newman’s score). The characters, however well-acted, are not particularly round. But well-acted this film is; Tom Hanks brings up the earnest and capacity of his character, and Mark Rylance is also a strong, dignified presence. The film is beautifully made, from Adam Stockhausen’s production design to Kasia Walicka-Maimone’s costume design, all nicely captured by Janusz Kaminski’s camera work.
