Toy Story 3: whatever I said before stands. Still the best movie of 2010, upon a review. It hits the same notes, packs the same emotional punch and the characters remain as rich as they felt the first time. Paths of Glory: what a wonderful little gem of a movie. It’s “smallness” refers not to its value, but at how tightly packed all the elements are, reduced to their essences, almost sometimes to the point of caricature. It fits perfectly the absurdity of the story (which is absurd not because it couldn’t or didn’t happen, but exactly because it did). Oh, and those beautiful tracking shots!

The Third Man: do I need to talk about this? It’s one of the great ones; it should be put on a pedestal and idolized by people. Everything works: the unusual music, the unusual angles, the amazing editing, the acting. Great story, one of the greatest movie speeches ever. I watched it (for the fourth time), immediately wanted to see it again. I could rave all night, but enough is enough. It doesn’t need me doing it.

Brief Encounter: what a beautiful, beautiful movie. David Lean had such a great touch. It’s such a delicate, heart-breaking story, so well acted, so well written (I loved this one line about the sun!). The parallel romance between the station guard and the cafe owner, also seen in moments, is a great addition. Oh, and the use of music and photographic changes! Great stuff!

Stagecoach: still great, very exciting. It’s a great array of characters in display there, and John Wayne’s introduction remains great. 1939 was indeed a magical year for movies.

Toy Story & Toy Story 2: seeing them together for the first time in many years. They remain great fun, and still resonate with me, thematically. And indeed, the way the arch is completed in Toy Story 3 makes me believe that this is one of the greatest trilogies of all time.

Toy Story 3: remarkable. Fantastic. Brilliant. I really don’t know what to say. It has some amazing sequences, that can beat the hell out of most action movies released in this or any summer. Or winter. The characters are great, their conflict is sincere and well-put. Dang, really. Oh, and those tears at the end. Well, you know, hmm, the 3D glasses, hmm, still need some work done.

Night and the City: oh, gosh, brilliant. I can’t recall many movies where the protagonist is so hateful, so twisted, like Harry Fabian. It’s great there is so little moral ambiguity about this one. And it’s so nice to look at, too. Yes, I can say I loved it.

The African Queen: Huston, Katie, Bogie.. Does it really get much better than this? And wow, the Blu-ray looks absolutely awesome!! Very close to a perfect night of entertainment.
