Rio: visually beautiful, the music is (for the most part) quite nice, but the story is disappointing. The stereotypes were not as bad as I expected, but as expected they were still there. In short, fun, but not to par with the best out there.

Toy Story 3: whatever I said before stands. Still the best movie of 2010, upon a review. It hits the same notes, packs the same emotional punch and the characters remain as rich as they felt the first time. The Way Back: an old-fashioned adventure, indeed a kind of movie that is somewhat rare nowadays. I think the character development was a bit on the weak side, for the most part, but the movie is well done, decently-enough acted. Beautiful cinematography of the sweeping vistas. The makeup (nominated earlier today) was indeed nice, serving the story subtly instead of itself.

Inception: a review didn’t completely put away my issues with the movie (a few, maybe 2 or 3 lines, could be cut from Ellen Page’s character). Some of the details of the proceedings make even less sense to me now; by the other hand, the emotional punch the movie carries is even greater upon the second view. Sherlock Holmes: It’s a fun start for the franchise. Robert Downey Jr. does a great job, as usual. They have a difficult job showing Holmes doing his thing without it seeming either so easy we could do it, but at the same time not so abstract and unlikely it seems planted.

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole: gorgeously looking film (Even if they abuse a bit of slow-mo. The director being who he is, it’s no surprise.) The story could be better, and there is a musical interlude that could be avoided, but it’s fun enough. The visuals alone are worth it.

Samurai III: Duel at Ganryu Island: a worthy finish to the trilogy. It’s the better of the three, but that’s partly because it carries the advantage of having both the backstory provided to it by the first two, as well as a proper ending. Samurai II: Duel at Ichijoji Temple: interesting enough, but still needs to be seen as a part of the whole. As a stand-alone, it feels like something is missing. Again, I’m mostly impressed by 3 things: Mifune (as usually is the case), the camera work (beautifully revealing dolly and crane shots) and the music (it’s very Western-y, which fits the story).
