The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey: as a fan of the source material, the ponderous pace and the somewhat vacuous story is not really a problem, given how rich the characterizations are. The visual and tonal consistency with the original trilogy is both good and bad (since the tone of the original source differs). “Riddles in the Dark” is a wonderful piece, showcasing how great a character Sméagol is.

Wreck-It Ralph

Wreck-It Ralph: more earnest, and better for it, than the average animated film nowadays. It fails, however, to show a rich world, choosing instead for loud visuals, sound and voice acting (with the exception of John C. Reilly, who knows better). The excesses are even more evident because of the lovely, whimsical short that preceded it, Paperman, quiet and precise visually and aurally. Watch it here.

Brave

Brave: nice little story, with a meaningful theme. Visually, it’s a beauty to behold, both in character design and in world design. If there is a weakness in the storytelling, it’s in the humorous moments; not because they are bad, but because they don’t fit the whole as well.

Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted: very colorful film, but that doesn’t extend past the visuals. The story and characters are heartless, pointless and at best one-dimensional. It’s also surprisingly unfunny.

John Carter: old-fashioned epic, that has the sad disadvantage of looking like a copy of uncountable films that are likely copies of the original material this is based on. It has some visual flair going for it in the design of the alien species.

The Adventures of Tintin

The Adventures of Tintin: let there be no mistake: the animation is wonderful, the settings are beautiful, and the free-floating camera is a joy to behold. It’s hard to imagine this story being told in any other way. The problem, then, lies precisely at the story. It’s a perfectly serviceable old-fashioned adventure, as it’s supposed to be. But it’s not really anything more.

Puss in Boots

Puss in Boots: a typical DWA film will be well done and funny, a pleasure to sit through but empty and somewhat heartless, therefore easily forgettable. This one has the usual drawbacks, but not the usual strong points. It’s still quite well done, and the voice acting is good enough, but the humor is flat and the whole thing is almost boring.

Cars 2

Cars 2: once more, Pixar is dazzling with the visual creativity, with an expansion of the world seen in the original. As far as story goes, this is certainly more to the light side for their recent standards; also, thematically, it doesn’t feel right at home with what they did in Cars. That would be the main weakness in a very fun movie. (But still, incidentally, one lap ahead of both DWA and BlueSky).
