Sherlock Holmes: It’s a fun start for the franchise. Robert Downey Jr. does a great job, as usual. They have a difficult job showing Holmes doing his thing without it seeming either so easy we could do it, but at the same time not so abstract and unlikely it seems planted.

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole: gorgeously looking film (Even if they abuse a bit of slow-mo. The director being who he is, it’s no surprise.) The story could be better, and there is a musical interlude that could be avoided, but it’s fun enough. The visuals alone are worth it.

Samurai III: Duel at Ganryu Island: a worthy finish to the trilogy. It’s the better of the three, but that’s partly because it carries the advantage of having both the backstory provided to it by the first two, as well as a proper ending. Samurai II: Duel at Ichijoji Temple: interesting enough, but still needs to be seen as a part of the whole. As a stand-alone, it feels like something is missing. Again, I’m mostly impressed by 3 things: Mifune (as usually is the case), the camera work (beautifully revealing dolly and crane shots) and the music (it’s very Western-y, which fits the story). Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto: as is often the case with series that were planned as such, judging this as a stand alone is tough. Particularly in this story, where the characters are simply in the process of taking shape, and when they do the movie is over. It’s interesting enough that I wish I could watch the next one right now. The use of dolly is wonderful, and Toshiro Mifune is indeed a force of nature.

Inception: quite impressive, for summer fare particularly but not only. Fascinating story, some awesome action set pieces, great editing. I don’t think it’s Christopher Nolan’s best work (Memento and The Dark Knight are better). One thing bothered me: Ellen Page is used a bit too much for exposition purposes. I could have done without some of her dialogues. I like when the director trusts that I can understand stuff.

Toy Story 3: remarkable. Fantastic. Brilliant. I really don’t know what to say. It has some amazing sequences, that can beat the hell out of most action movies released in this or any summer. Or winter. The characters are great, their conflict is sincere and well-put. Dang, really. Oh, and those tears at the end. Well, you know, hmm, the 3D glasses, hmm, still need some work done.

Robin Hood: I like the new take on an old, old, familiar story. That in itself was a good starting point. But, it was maybe missing something. I can’t quite put my finger on it. And I generally like the director and the talent involved.
