Winter’s Bone

January 7, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Winter’s Bone: very powerful stuff, up until the very end. Trying not to spoil too much, too many pieces fall in place. But Jennifer Lawrence is superb, and John Hawkes is great as usual.

The Lineup

January 7, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

The Lineup: solid stuff. San Francisco is such a perfect setting for those stories. Still, I would say it’s more of a crime story than a noir, but I know I have a very particular definition in my head!

Shrek Forever After

January 7, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

‎‎Shrek Forever After: it’s amazing how much the movie resembles the character early on. It lost completely its edge. It became generic. It was a bit dated to start with, but now it’s completely bland. And, for the record, I’m still not at all sold on this whole 3D thing, either.

The Sniper

January 7, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

The Sniper: ah, at last a true noir again. This one had the right look, the right tone, the right characters. But then again it was directed by Edward Dmytryk, so that was to be somewhat expected.

Murder by Contract

January 7, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Murder by Contract: not quite a noir in my book either, but still a solid, economical piece of filmmaking. The music is very interesting, and the main character has the markings of an early Chigurh.

5 Against the House

January 7, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

5 Against the House: it’s, Ok, I guess. But if it’s a film noir, I’m a Native American. It’s more like a mixture of a lot of things. It barely works, but I’ve seen worse.

Robin Hood (2010)

January 7, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

‎‎Robin Hood: I like the new take on an old, old, familiar story. That in itself was a good starting point. But, it was maybe missing something. I can’t quite put my finger on it. And I generally like the director and the talent involved.

Night and the City (1950)

January 7, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Night and the City: oh, gosh, brilliant. I can’t recall many movies where the protagonist is so hateful, so twisted, like Harry Fabian. It’s great there is so little moral ambiguity about this one. And it’s so nice to look at, too. Yes, I can say I loved it.

Iron Man 2

January 7, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Iron Man 2: dumb fun. Fun, but dumb. You know what I mean. RDJ was still good, but the first one was better for being such a surprise.
